The new Show President is the Right Honourable Michael Jack MP. No stranger to the fruit industry, working in produce before he became a parliamentarian, Mr Jack has been a Minister of Horticulture and is at present Chairman of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee.
Michael Jack MP checks out this year’s cropOn a pre show visit in September touring orchards and packhouses in Kent organised by the Marden Fruit Show Committee, Michael Jack MP was given a snapshot of this year’s crop and the issues facing growers. Mr Jack was particularly impressed with the quality and taste of new apple varieties like Rubens and Cameo, “I’m thrilled that the industry is planting new varieties with such great flavour and potential for both growers and consumers.”
In his President’s Message in this year’s Show Handbook he emphasises his long association with the fruit industry. “I am delighted to again have the opportunity to contribute towards promoting the interests of the industry. So much has changed in the last few years. The industry is more professional, innovative and vibrant but more needs to be done. I am looking forward, as your President, to making my contribution to helping you all to have a truly positive and worthwhile future.”
