The 2015 Fruit Competition Schedule has been sent out to growers and this year we have £10,000 in the prize fund. There are 21 Classes in the Top Fruit Competition and 7 Classes in the Soft Fruit and Nuts. Each class has a Prize Sponsor and a Prize Money Sponsor giving first place £75, second place £50 and third place £25. The prizes can range from vouchers to Champagne to cut glass crystal and are chosen by the Show Team based on previous years prizes and a keen eye for the unusual and desirable.
The ‘Tastiest Apple’ competition is judged on the first morning of the show by a panel of judges invited jointly by The Fruit Grower who sponsor the £200 first prize and The Marden Fruit Show Society. The judges taste samples taken from all entries in the show competition classes for named varieties of dessert apples (Classes 3 -11), plus varieties of these apples in Classes 18 and 20.
The ‘Heaviest’ competitions for apples sponsored by Channel Weighing and pears sponsored by Chingford Fruit Ltd has a prize money pot of £75 for first, £50 for second and £25 for third place. There is a special 330 prize for the single heaviest fruit in each.
